Casey The Wonder Dog ... 8/2000 to 9/7/2011

Casey passed away at 8 AM on Wednesday, September 7.  

Let me tell you about her last few days.

On Saturday the 3rd we went to the local Bayfront Beach and walked the boardwalk to the beach area ... she didn't want to swim, which was strange for Casey, because she loved the water ... but she did 'scratch her back' on the sand for what was going to be the last time ... as I now know, it was her way of saying "goodbye" to 'her' beach days. 

After Saturday, Casey started having real difficulty breathing, but she still went for her 'potty' walks and met me at the door when I got back from where-ever [although I was never gone for more than a couple hours at a time]. 

Then on Tuesday the 6th, I made a trip to the recycle center and of course she got what was to be her final car ride ... and we came home the 'long way' ... with 'our favorite' music playing on the CD .., The Beach Boys "Kokomo" ... we'd play it on the way to and from Dauphin Island Beach, with me 'rewinding' the CD so it could repeat.  She wasn't interested in eating on Tuesday, but I had a piece of steak and cut it up in small bites and she ate from my hand.  [Her last meal was her favorite food ... steak!]

On Wednesday, the 7th, I went to my Church for Adoration from 3-4 AM and took some photos of her before I left, thinking she might not be alive when I returned ... but she was.  She was in distress and was having severe trouble breathing ... although the breathing difficulty had started about a week ago, on Wednesday morning, after I got back around 4:30 AM, it was especially distressing as she could not lie down for more than a few seconds at a time.  I took her out and she peed and then when she got to the bottom of the steps up to my Condo, she stopped, looked at the steps for maybe 15 seconds and then very slowly, one step at a time, walked up the steps and into the Condo.

She was unable to lie down and breathe, so I sat on the floor of the bedroom with her and cried and talked to her and told her how much I loved her and that it was okay for her to cross the Rainbow Bridge, I must have said "you can go bye-bye; it's okay; Mama will be okay" dozens of times ... in a bit, she indicated she wanted to go out ... so I put on her leash but she just walked to the edge of the porch and she stood there and looked out over the parking lot and the median beyond, where we'd made many a potty-run, then sat and took one more long look before turning and coming back inside  She was there 3 or 4 minutes, saying goodbye.  Once inside, I told her I would call our [new] Vet when they opened and set up for her to go in because I couldn't stand for her to suffer so much.  I got on the computer and emailed by closest friends telling them I what I was going to have to do.  When the Vet's office opened at 7:30 AM, I called and set up a 9 AM time to come in.  Casey went to the sliding doors that open to the back deck and I thought maybe she wanted to go potty, so I opened the door and left it open, I knew she wasn't going to run off.  She went onto the deck and sat down and looked out over the golf course [we're beside the 18th hole], where we'd taken many walks and nearly always took our 'early morning potty run' [Yes, I pick up her poop].  She was there 3 or 4 minutes.  I went out and disturbed her reminding her that we'd sat on the chairs just a few days ago watching the clouds and rain.  She turned and looked at me and then turned back to gaze and say goodbye to the 'backyard.'

She came inside, stopped and starred at the front door [the Condo is small] for a minute or two, then walked another 3 feet and sat down, starring at me ... I was on the computer ... and I immediately looked up to see those beautiful brown eyes with that mesmerizing gaze that had won my heart so many years ago.  I went over and sat beside her, crying, rubbing her side and telling her how much I loved her and how wonderful a dog she'd been and that I'd remember her forever in my heart and it was okay to go bye-bye over the Rainbow Bridge.  Then I said "It would save me so much [pain] if you'd just fall over and die" ... and she did.  She went on her side and I said through my tears, "Casey, I was kidding, I don't want you to die" but I know, she was already gone.  She'd said her goodbyes to the places she loved, and to me.  She laid down and ran over the Rainbow Bridge.  I petted her and told her that I released her to heaven ... and her heart beat one last time followed by two breaths, and she was gone.  I kissed her one last time.

Loyal and devoted to the end ... I lost my best friend, my soul-mate.  I lined a low-sided plastic bin with a blanket and gently positioned her inside, making it appear that she'd climbed in and laid down to sleep.  I covered her with a sheet.  Then I called the Vet and told them, but went over to see them for my own peace of mind.  The Vet verified what I already knew.

Then I called Ray, the owner of Eternal Pet Crematory in Silverhill, AL, to let him know that Casey had died.  We'd had an earlier conversation and I found him to be very caring.  I drove Casey Nicole The Wonder Dog over to be cremated and put on "Kokomo" [replaying it when it ended] all the way over there ... sound turned way up, me singing and crying, driving with one hand, rubbing her soft fur with the other.  Ray is a most gentle loving animal loving understanding person.  I carried Casey in and left her and her bin on the scales.  Ray cremated her after I left.  As I said, Ray is so caring; since many people drive to the Gulf to spend vacations and bring their pets, he also does a 'while you wait' cremation ... the only place around to do so. 

I bought a beautiful Purpleheart wood urn for Casey on ebay.  After I dropped off Casey at the crematory, I dropped the urn off at a friend here who did some additional finishing work on it.  

Today, Thursday the 8th, I went to Mass and had Casey's collar and attachments [id tag, rabies tag and St Anthony medal, which she always wore] blessed as well as a miraculous medal I'd brought back from Italy in 2001 for this occasion, a crucifix with a relic from the catacombs, and some shells from Dauphin Island Beach.  I'll pick up the urn and her cremains and bring them home for a small personal ceremony before placing her cremains and blessed items inside the urn forever.

Casey had her cancer surgery at the Ocoee Animal Hospital on 12 November 2010.  She and I had nearly nine months to the day for our 'goodbyes' of which there were many.  I have no regrets that my dog lived and ate better than most people in Third World Countries ... she was my 'baby' and I loved her unashamedly.  

Much more to tell at a later date.  I love that dog still ... because she lives in my heart.

One of the soldiers, feeling that it was to late for everyone to flee jumped on the grave with the intention of saving his comrades. Indeed he saved them. He inentionally took his life (suicide) for a noble cause i.e. saving the lives of his soldier. To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause. Scholars have paralled this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers. If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair. The same can be said for the Kamikazees in Japan. They died (via crashing their planes into ships) to kill the enemies for the homeland. You can call them crazy i you want but their act was not one of suicide that is despised by Islam. So the scholars main point is that "IT SEEMS AS THOUGH YOUR INTENTION IS THE MAIN ISSUE" and Allah (SWT) knows best.

What Arab Civilization?

This letter was sent to Carly Fiorina, CEO of Hewlett Packard Corporation, in response to a speech given by her on September 26, 2001.

Dear Madame Fiorina:

It is with great interest that I read your speech delivered on September 26, 2001, titled "Technology, Business and Our way of Life: What's Next" [sic]. I was particularly interested in the story you told at the end of your speech, about the Arab/Muslim civilization. As an Assyrian, a non-Arab, Christian native of the Middle East, whose ancestors reach back to 5000 B.C., I wish to clarify some points you made in this little story, and to alert you to the dangers of unwittingly being drawn into the Arabist/Islamist ideology, which seeks to assimilate all cultures and religions into the Arab/Islamic fold.

I know you are a very busy woman, but please find ten minutes to read what follows, as it is a perspective that you will not likely get from anywhere else. I will answer some of the specific points you made in your speech, then conclude with a brief perspective on this Arabist/Islamist ideology.

Arabs and Muslims appeared on the world scene in 630 A.D., when the armies of Muhammad began their conquest of the Middle East. We should be very clear that this was a military conquest, not a missionary enterprise, and through the use of force, authorized by a declaration of a Jihad against infidels, Arabs/Muslims were able to forcibly convert and assimilate non-Arabs and non-Mulsims into their fold. Very few indigenous communities of the Middle East survived this -- primarily Assyrians, Jews, Armenians and Coptics (of Egypt).

Having conquered the Middle East, Arabs placed these communities under a Dhimmi (see the book Dhimmi, by Bat Ye'Or) system of governance, where the communities were allowed to rule themselves as religious minorities (Christians, Jews and Zoroastrian). These communities had to pay a tax (called a Jizzya in Arabic) that was, in effect, a penalty for being non-Muslim, and that was typically 80% in times of tolerance and up to 150% in times of oppression. This tax forced many of these communities to convert to Islam, as it was designed to do.

You state, "its architects designed buildings that defied gravity." I am not sure what you are referring to, but if you are referring to domes and arches, the fundamental architectural breakthrough of using a parabolic shape instead of a spherical shape for these structures was made by the Assyrians more than 1300 years earlier, as evidenced by their archaeological record.

You state, "its mathematicians created the algebra and algorithms that would enable the building of computers, and the creation of encryption." The fundamental basis of modern mathematics had been laid down not hundreds but thousands of years before by Assyrians and Babylonians, who already knew of the concept of zero, of the Pythagorean Theorem, and of many, many other developments expropriated by Arabs/Muslims (see History of Babylonian Mathematics, Neugebauer).

You state, "its doctors examined the human body, and found new cures for disease." The overwhelming majority of these doctors (99%) were Assyrians. In the fourth, fifth, and sixth centuries Assyrians began a systematic translation of the Greek body of knowledge into Assyrian. At first they concentrated on the religious works but then quickly moved to science, philosophy and medicine. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Galen, and many others were translated into Assyrian, and from Assyrian into Arabic. It is these Arabic translations which the Moors brought with them into Spain, and which the Spaniards translated into Latin and spread throughout Europe, thus igniting the European Renaissance.

By the sixth century A.D., Assyrians had begun exporting back to Byzantia their own works on science, philosophy and medicine. In the field of medicine, the Bakhteesho Assyrian family produced nine generations of physicians, and founded the great medical school at Gundeshapur (Iran). Also in the area of medicine, (the Assyrian) Hunayn ibn-Ishaq's textbook on ophthalmology, written in 950 A.D., remained the authoritative source on the subject until 1800 A.D.

In the area of philosophy, the Assyrian philosopher Job of Edessa developed a physical theory of the universe, in the Assyrian language, that rivaled Aristotle's theory, and that sought to replace matter with forces (a theory that anticipated some ideas in quantum mechanics, such as the spontaneous creation and destruction of matter that occurs in the quantum vacuum).

One of the greatest Assyrian achievements of the fourth century was the founding of the first university in the world, the School of Nisibis, which had three departments, theology, philosophy and medicine, and which became a magnet and center of intellectual development in the Middle East. The statutes of the School of Nisibis, which have been preserved, later became the model upon which the first Italian university was based (see The Statutes of the School of Nisibis, by Arthur Voobus).

When Arabs and Islam swept through the Middle East in 630 A.D., they encountered 600 years of Assyrian Christian civilization, with a rich heritage, a highly developed culture, and advanced learning institutions. It is this civilization that became the foundation of the Arab civilization.

You state, "Its astronomers looked into the heavens, named the stars, and paved the way for space travel and exploration." This is a bit melodramatic. In fact, the astronomers you refer to were not Arabs but Chaldeans and Babylonians (of present day south-Iraq), who for millennia were known as astronomers and astrologers, and who were forcibly Arabized and Islamized -- so rapidly that by 750 A.D. they had disappeared completely.

You state, "its writers created thousands of stories. Stories of courage, romance and magic. Its poets wrote of love, when others before them were too steeped in fear to think of such things." There is very little literature in the Arabic language that comes from this period you are referring to (the Koran is the only significant piece of literature), whereas the literary output of the Assyrians and Jews was vast. The third largest corpus of Christian writing, after Latin and Greek, is by the Assyrians in the Assyrian language (also called Syriac; see here.)

You state, "when other nations were afraid of ideas, this civilization thrived on them, and kept them alive. When censors threatened to wipe out knowledge from past civilizations, this civilization kept the knowledge alive, and passed it on to others." This is a very important issue you raise, and it goes to the heart of the matter of what Arab/Islamic civilization represents. I reviewed a book titled How Greek Science Passed to the Arabs, in which the author lists the significant translators and interpreters of Greek science. Of the 22 scholars listed, 20 were Assyrians, 1 was Persian and 1 an Arab. I state at the end of my review: "The salient conclusion which can be drawn from O'Leary's book is that Assyrians played a significant role in the shaping of the Islamic world via the Greek corpus of knowledge. If this is so, one must then ask the question, what happened to the Christian communities which made them lose this great intellectual enterprise which they had established. One can ask this same question of the Arabs. Sadly, O'Leary's book does not answer this question, and we must look elsewhere for the answer." I did not answer this question I posed in the review because it was not the place to answer it, but the answer is very clear, the Christian Assyrian community was drained of its population through forced conversion to Islam (by the Jizzya), and once the community had dwindled below a critical threshold, it ceased producing the scholars that were the intellectual driving force of the Islamic civilization, and that is when the so called "Golden Age of Islam" came to an end (about 850 A.D.).

Islam the religion itself was significantly molded by Assyrians and Jews (see Nestorian Influence on Islam and Hagarism: the Making of the Islamic World).

Arab/Islamic civilization is not a progressive force, it is a regressive force; it does not give impetus, it retards. The great civilization you describe was not an Arab/Muslim accomplishment, it was an Assyrian accomplishment that Arabs expropriated and subsequently lost when they drained, through the forced conversion of Assyrians to Islam, the source of the intellectual vitality that propelled it. What other Arab/Muslim civilization has risen since? What other Arab/Muslim successes can we cite?

You state, "and perhaps we can learn a lesson from his [Suleiman] example: It was leadership based on meritocracy, not inheritance. It was leadership that harnessed the full capabilities of a very diverse population that included Christianity, Islamic, and Jewish traditions." In fact, the Ottomans were extremely oppressive to non-Muslims. For example, young Christian boys were forcefully taken from their families, usually at the age of 8-10, and inducted into the Janissaries, (yeniceri in Turkish) where they were Islamized and made to fight for the Ottoman state. What literary, artistic or scientific achievements of the Ottomans can we point to? We can, on the other hand, point to the genocide of 750,000 Assyrians, 1.5 million Armenians and 400,000 Greeks in World War One by the Kemalist "Young Turk" government. This is the true face of Islam.

Arabs/Muslims are engaged in an explicit campaign of destruction and expropriation of cultures and communities, identities and ideas. Wherever Arab/Muslim civilization encounters a non-Arab/Muslim one, it attempts to destroy it (as the Buddhist statues in Afghanistan were destroyed, as Persepolis was destroyed by the Ayotollah Khomeini). This is a pattern that has been recurring since the advent of Islam, 1400 years ago, and is amply substantiated by the historical record. If the "foreign" culture cannot be destroyed, then it is expropriated, and revisionist historians claim that it is and was Arab, as is the case of most of the Arab "accomplishments" you cited in your speech. For example, Arab history texts in the Middle East teach that Assyrians were Arabs, a fact that no reputable scholar would assert, and that no living Assyrian would accept. Assyrians first settled Nineveh, one of the major Assyrian cities, in 5000 B.C., which is 5630 years before Arabs came into that area. Even the word 'Arab' is an Assyrian word, meaning "Westerner" (the first written reference to Arabs was by the Assyrian King Sennacherib, 800 B.C., in which he tells of conquering the "ma'rabayeh" -- Westerners. Even in America this Arabization policy continues. On October 27th a coalition of seven Assyrian and Maronite organizations sent an official letter to the Arab American Institute asking it to stop identifying Assyrians and Maronites as Arabs, which it had been deliberately doing.

There are minorities and nations struggling for survival in the Arab/Muslim ocean of the Middle East and Africa (Assyrians, Armenians, Coptics, Jews, southern Sudanese, Ethiopians, Nigerians...), and we must be very sensitive not to unwittingly and inadvertently support Islamic fascism and Arab Imperialism, with their attempts to wipe out all other cultures, religions and civilizations. It is incumbent upon each one of us to do our homework and research when making statements and speeches about these sensitive matters.

The Real Reason Obama Dissed PM Gordon Brown

Obama’s paternal grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama was arrested by the British in 1949 as a sympathizer for the Kikuyu Central Association, the organization behind the Mau Mau. His wife tells of horrific torture of her husband at the hands of the British. Not all of her recollections are accurate as one scene described as "hell on earth" was probably no more than the process of delousing.

The Mau Mau were not innocent victims of the British, they were vicious guerrilla fighters. Mau Mau leadership forced members to violate not only Christian ethics, but every family and tribal ethic as well. Members were isolated from everyone except the Mau Mau. Recruits to this cult were forced to seal their oaths by digging up corpses and eating their putrefied flesh, copulating with sheep, dogs or adolescent girls, and by drinking the famed ‘Kaberichia cocktail’-a mixture of semen and menstrual blood. Obama has a grudge against the Brits for their abuse of his grandfather, a subversive who supported a bunch of ferocious guerillas. And as always with Obama, rather than deal with his own inner demons, he uses his position of power to act out. Another campaign promise kept: Obama is most assuredly changing the world’s view of America. Perhaps Obama is saving up all the really cool gifts for Ahmedinejad.

The one person at the apex of this horror was Jomo ("Burning Spear") Kenyatta longtime Kikuyu nationalist leader. The British attempted to keep Kenyatta in jail in 1960 eventually failed. He became the leader of the Kenya African National Union and got himself elected President. In 1964, Barak Hussein Obama, Senior, became a senior economist in Kenyatta's government. Kenyans contend that when the Mau Mau movement is properly appraised, it will rank in history with the "French Revolution or the War of American Independence." [But only if you read the politically correct scrubbed history and not the actual on the ground facts.]

72 Virgins

Jihadi blows himself up for 72 “virgins” and finds himself on the edge of heaven, but doesn't see the “virgins.” St Peter sends for him and he walks the long path up to “the big book of names of those entering into heaven.” St Peter sits behind the book and scans and scans and scans . . . there's a computer the likes of which no man has devised yet hidden by the open book . . . page after page after page . . . using every spelling of the jihadi’s name, St Peter cannot locate his name.

Then after all research is exhausted, he asks “What have you to say for yourself?” The jihadi looks at St Peter as if he's the most stupid Jew he's ever seen and says very proudly “I blew myself up for the cause of Muhammad.” St Peter looks at him with pity and says . . . “I am so sorry, you cannot enter here. There is a special place reserved for you.” The jihadi doesn't pay attention to the first sentence and becomes gloated with self-pride “a special place reserved for ME?!” and imagines his 72 'virgins' beautiful with soft as silk skin, dark eyes, and long flowing black hair living in a house that rivals the Taj Mahal.

St Peter says to the jihadi . . . “you will have a guide to lead you to the place where you will spend eternity.” And a puffed up jihadi says “bring it on” with a huge content smile on his face.

A door in a cloud opens wide and a guide appears in dazzling robes, bejeweled and sparkling. The guide reaches out his hand and says “this way my friend, my close friend. We have your 72 ‘virgins’” [the last said with a chuckle]. “Come with me my familiar friend.”

So the jihadi reaches out his right hand and the guide grasps it tightly. Suddenly and snake-like, a sinewy rope wraps itself around the jihadi's wrist so that he will be unable to pull away. A look of horror comes over the jihadi's face as the pit of his stomach lurches to warn him that "this isn't the 72 'virgins' he knew." As soon as the opening behind them closes, the clothing of the guide morphs into hideous garish clashing colors and the jewels become gargoyle-like heads . . . only these are real and not carved in stone.

What had appeared to be a lovely scene from the other side of the door, morphed into the interior of a volcano as the guide and the jihadi were pulled downward by an unseen force. As the two reached the center of this horrible scene, they had passed many screaming souls locked inside tortured and twisted bodies. As the jihadi looked at his body he was that acutely aware that his skin was crawling with small worms and maggots and he saw that his clothing was torn to shreds and there were open sores on the exposed parts of his body.

The jihadi's mind was reeling as he internally heard the Koran's verses being read in Arabic. "This wasn't supposed to happen, where are my promised 72 'virgins?'" he inwardly screamed. He looked at his right arm, now tightly twisted by the sinewy ropelike poisonous snake. He noticed at once that his skin was hanging on him and there was no blood in his arm . . . or in the sores . . . or feeding the worms and maggots. "Where am I?!" he screamed over the heart pounding cacaphony around him. His guide turned his face to the jihadi . . . who instantly surmised where he was . . . and had he had blood in his veins, it would have drained out of his body at the sight of that horrendous face. The bedlam overpowered the jihadi. The roar of the inner reaches of the volcano, the screams of the other souls, the cackling laughter of other guides, would it ever end? "And what about my 72 'virgins'??" he howled.

Then, all the noise seemed to abate and an uneasy silence surrounded the jihadi. His wild eyes finally focused on a form in front of him. The being was hideous, nauseous, with the odor of rotting flesh. If he could have done so, the jihadi would have vomited all over himself, but there was nothing within him, not a drop of saliva in his mouth, no tears in his eyes, nothing liquid. Abject hopelessness was his sustenance and he felt the hopelessness in his entire body. "Oh god," whispered the jihadi, "allu achbar, there is no god but allah and I am his faithful servant." He had barely finished his prayer when the being in front of him roared in laughter that was like a suffocating blanket. The being transfigured into an Arab caliph for just a second before returning to its original hideous form. The jihadi's mind was reeling with reality. "That was no Arab Caliph, that was Muhammad. What is he doing here? Where is the heavenly place reserved for me? Where are my 72 'virgins?'"

If he could have, the jihadi would have cried tears of remorse. But that was an emotion and a virtue which had never been taught to him on earth. He'd never felt sorry for the infidels he'd killed. He'd only felt the pride of the jihadis, stoked by the imams and the mullahs. His mind raced. "I did everything right. I followed every tenet of Islam I was taught. I was promised heaven and 72 'virgins' and I end up here? Why? Why am I in this hellish place? What the hell is going on? I was promised heaven by the mullahs and the imams. What the hell?!"

As the thoughts of the jihadi raced through his mind, the form in front of him heard them all. His raw searing laughter scraped across the jihadi causing his sores to inflame and pierce his soul with disabling pain. As the laughter died down, the form reached out his left hand. Slowly opening his hand, he revealed 72 cold white raisins and said in Arabic "Behold, jihadi, your 72 'virgins' are the last cooling food that will ever pass across your parched tongue and they will remain a heavy reminder in your stomach for all eternity."

*Notice that the 72 raisins were given in the outstretched left hand . . . the 'unclean' hand which wipes excrement. There's symbolism there.

If you are Catholic and still don't understand why it is against your faith to vote for someone like Obama here are the basics (I ~~http://catholicfire.blogspot.com ~~ have been blogging about Obama since 2004, when I first became acquainted with him and his anti-Catholic stance on the issue of human life. As a prayer intercessor for nurse Jill Stanek at that time, I became acutely aware of the evil actions of Barack Obama, a puppet of the democratic party and the culture of death.)

Where Barack Obama stands on the issues:

* He believes in sex education provided by Planned parenthood to children at the kindergarten level (5 - year - olds!).

*He also has a voting record that consistently supports abortion - even the horrific partial - birth abortion.

*Twice, Obama voted NO to bills prohibiting tax funding of abortions. Yes, he thinks that we should pay for people to murder their children!

*In April 2007, he voted YES on expanding research to more on embryonic stem cell lines, which involves the destruction of human life.

*In July of 2006, he voted NO on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions.

*In March 2005, he voted YES on $100M to reduce teen pregnancy by education & contraceptives. (Sex education starting at age 5 and contraceptives, which act as abortifacients.)

*In February 2004, his wife, Michelle, sent out a fundraising letter, which actually stated her concern over the rise of conservatism in the Country, and that the ‘so-called’ partial-birth abortion was a legitimate medical procedure that should be protected.

*In 2003, as chairman of the next Senate committee to which BAIPA (Born Alive Infants Protection Act) was sent, Obama prevented it from even getting a hearing. BAIPA stated that all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted.

*In 2001 and 2002, Obama was the only Illinois senator to speak out against the "Born Alive Infants Protection Act" on the Senate floor and in 2003 killed the bill in committee. This would have outlawed "live birth abortion," where labor is induced and an infant is delivered prematurely only to be put in some dark corner of a hospital until he/she expires on his/her own.

*He voted against a cloning ban in 2000, but then turned around and voted for it in 2001.

*In 1997, Obama twice voted “present” on an Illinois partial-birth abortion ban.

In addition, he is also a strong supporter of homosexual marriages.

As you can see, his views are extreme and his record is that of a hard - core radical liberal, anti-Catholic, anti-Christian in every aspect on human life and family issues.

End of Life Issues . . . where people are tempted to play God.

The International Herald Tribune has an article on end of life which gives the elderly another option to aggressive treatment which they themselves can decide based on all salient medical facts. They are calling it "slow medicine" and if you followed the demise of Pope John Paul the Great, I believe this is the type of elder-care he opted for, although it did not have a name at that time.

CNN Health has an article which originated in Chicago, IL, from meetings of "a task force whose members come from prestigious universities, medical groups, the military and government agencies. They include the Department of Homeland Security, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services." The results were a set of proposed guidelines in which doctors and medical personnel make "God-like" decisions regarding which patients are treated in case of a wide spread health care disaster. The report states:

To prepare, hospitals should designate a triage team with the Godlike task of deciding who will and who won't get lifesaving care, the task force wrote. Those out of luck are the people at high risk of death and a slim chance of long-term survival. But the recommendations get much more specific, and include:

• People older than 85.

• Those with severe trauma, which could include critical injuries from car crashes and shootings.

• Severely burned patients older than 60.

• Those with severe mental impairment, which could include advanced Alzheimer's disease.

• Those with a severe chronic disease, such as advanced heart failure, lung disease or poorly controlled diabetes.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that there were no Roman Catholics at those meetings. An article on End-of-Life-Ethics states:

The Scriptures provide a sound foundation and a sure direction in helping us to respond to end-of-life questions by offering three major points: 1) life is a basic, but not absolute, good; 2) we are to be stewards of life, but we don’t have complete control and 3) we understand death in the context of belief in new life.

The National Catholic Bioethics Center has a publication "A Catholic Guide to End-of-Life Decisions An Explanation of Church Teaching on Advance Directives, Euthanasia, and Physician Assisted Suicide" available for purchase. And Eternal Word Television Network has an article on End-of-Life Decisions which states:

The natural law and the Fifth Commandment requires that all ordinary means be used to preserve life, such as food, water, exercise, and medical care. Since the middle ages, however, Catholic theologians have recognized that human beings are not morally obligated to undergo every possible medical treatment to save their lives. Treatments that are unduly burdensome or sorrowful, such as amputation, or beyond the economic means of the person, or which only prolong the suffering of a dying person, are morally extraordinary, meaning they are not obligatory.

Whether you are Roman Catholic or not, you might want to read their point of view before writing your own living will. Just Google "living will form" for information on free forms.

4 Minutes and 57 Second Reflection from 4 April 1968

Ladies and Gentlemen - I'm only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening. Because...

I have some very sad news for all of you, and I think sad news for all of our fellow citizens, and people who love peace all over the world, and that is that Martin Luther King was shot and was killed tonight in Memphis, Tennessee.

Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellow human beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day, in this difficult time for the United States, it's perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in.

For those of you who are black - considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people who were responsible - you can be filled with bitterness, and with hatred, and a desire for revenge.

We can move in that direction as a country, in greater polarization - black people amongst blacks, and white amongst whites, filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand and to comprehend, and replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand, compassion and love.

For those of you who are black and are tempted to be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act, against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed, but he was killed by a white man.

But we have to make an effort in the United States, we have to make an effort to understand, to get beyond these rather difficult times.

My favorite poet was Aeschylus. He once wrote: "Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God."

What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness, but is love and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they be white or whether they be black.

So I ask you tonight to return home, to say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King, yeah that's true, but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country, which all of us love - a prayer for understanding and that compassion of which I spoke. We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We've had difficult times in the past. And we will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of lawlessness; and it's not the end of disorder.

But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together, want to improve the quality of our life, and want justice for all human beings that abide in our land.

Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world.

Let us dedicate ourselves to that, and say a prayer for our country and for our people.
